Experience Neustrelitz! Royally

The duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz founded the royal capital Neustrelitz in the middle of the idyllic lakes district of Mecklenburg in 1733. The town at the lake of Fierce is a worthwhile place for a vacation if you are interested in nature and culture. The baroque, star-like form of the town around a square marketplace is unique in Europe. A stroll through the streets of the old part of the town, which is under a preservation order, will remind you every step of the heyday of the royal capital in the 19th century. Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, who was a student of the famous German architect Schinkel, formed the townscape for almost fifty years in his preferred style of a synthesis of Gothic and classicism that harmonizes perfectly with the modern architecture. Places worth visiting are the castle grounds, a green oasis at the edge of the town centre with a baroque middle axis, numerous sculptures and wells, old trees and romantic walks. It was built from 1729 to 1731 and enlarged in the English style in the 19th century according to plans of Peter Josef Lenné. To the castle grounds belong beautiful buildings like the neo-Gothic castle church, the classicistic orangery, the Marstall, the temple of Hebe and the memorial hall of Queen Luise of Prussia. Here the visitor can trace back the life of the popular Prussian queen, who was a born Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and died near Neustrelitz at the castle of Hohenzieritz in 1810.
